Author & Speaker
Strategic Horizons

B. JOSEPH PINE II is an internationally acclaimed author, speaker, and management advisor to Fortune 500 companies and entrepreneurial start-ups alike. He is co-founder of Strategic Horizons LLP, a thinking studio dedicated to helping businesses conceive and design new ways of adding value to their economic offerings.
In 2020 Mr. Pine and his partner James H. Gilmore re-released in hardcover The Experience Economy: Competing for Customer Time, Attention, and Money featuring an all-new Preview to their best-selling 1999 book The Experience Economy: Work Is Theatre & Every Business a Stage.

The book demonstrates how goods and services are no longer enough; what companies must offer today are experiences – memorable events that engage each customer in an inherently personal way. It further shows that in today’s Experience Economy companies now compete against the world for the time, attention, and money of individual customers. The Experience Economy has been published in fifteen languages and was named one of the 100 best business books of all time by 800ceoread (now Porchlight).

In 2011 Mr. Pine also co-wrote with Mr. Kim C. Korn Infinite Possibility: Creating Customer Value on the Digital Frontier, which describes how to use digital technology to stage experiences that fuse the real and the virtual. At its core is a new framework called the Multiverse that builds on the fundamental nature of the created universe – time, space, and matter – by showing how digital technology flips each of these dimensions on their head to create new worlds, first in our imagination and then in our experience.

In 2007 Mr. Pine wrote Authenticity: What Consumers Really Want with Mr. Gilmore, which recognizes that in a world of increasingly paid-for experiences, people no longer accept the fake from the phony, but want the real from the genuine. Amazon.com named it one of the top ten business books of 2007 while a cover story in TIME magazine cited it as one of “10 ideas that are changing the world”.

His first book was the award-winning Mass Customization: The New Frontier in Business Competition, which details the shift companies are making from mass-producing standardized offerings to mass customizing goods and services that efficiently fulfill the wants and needs of individual customers. The Financial Times chose it as one of the seven best business books of 1993.

Mr. Pine consults with numerous companies around the world, helping them embrace the ideas and frameworks he writes about, develop concepts for creating more economic value, and see those concepts become reality. In his speaking and teaching activities, Mr. Pine has addressed the World Economic Forum, the original TED conference, and the Consumer Electronics Show. He has been a Visiting Scholar with the MIT Design Lab and a Visiting Professor at the University of Amsterdam. He has also taught at Penn State, Duke Corporate Education, the University of Minnesota, and UCLA’s Anderson Graduate School of Management, and today is a Lecturer in Columbia University’s Master’s Program in Technology Management in the School of Professional Studies. He serves on the editorial boards of Strategy & Leadership and Strategic Direction and is a Senior Fellow with both the Design Futures Council and the European Centre for the Experience Economy, which he co-founded.
Prior to co-founding Strategic Horizons, Mr. Pine held a number of technical and managerial positions with IBM. He is a prolific writer, including articles for the Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, Chief Executive, Worldlink, CIO, Strategy & Leadership, and the IBM Systems Journal, among many others. He is frequently quoted in such places as Forbes, The New York Times, Wired, USA TODAY, Investor’s Business Daily, ABC News, Good Morning America, Fortune, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, and Industry Week.

I’m a naturally inquisitive person. People fascinate me. I enjoy learning about them – their strengths, their weaknesses, the journey they took to get where they are. I like identifying a great person for a role and helping them to be excellent. People are my passion.

Life should be fun. I want to be able to show people a great time – and that’s where Strike comes in. It’s a one-stop entertainment shop. It’s carefree and fun. We have that in common.

One of my favourite books is “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”, appropriate given I feel as though my career is built on a journey of hitchhiking from country to country. I grew up in South Africa, where I studied Commerce before working for Bic Corp. I then moved to their New York office to gain international experience. It was then onto London where I further fine-tuned my skills in strategic thinking, innovation, leadership and mentoring. But my first foray into the entertainment industry was here, in Australia with Village Nine Leisure and then EDG Entertainment before setting up Strike Entertainment.

Big houses are built on great foundations. Creating substantial IP and gaining a great understanding of what works and what doesn’t was crucial. Armed with this knowledge, I set up Strike in 2002. It was an incredible journey, but nothing like the journey we’ve been on since.

The foundation is set and now it’s time to grow. To date, Strike has 12 venues and more in the pipeline. We have recently bought the franchise rights for Sky Zone for Asia Pacific – a high growth business model complementary to the Strike brand… and a whole lot of trampolines. In July 2015, we rolled Strike and Sky Zone up into Funlab, a company that is set to become an entertainment giant.

The Strike and Sky Zone journey is just kicking into second gear and I’m excited to be behind the wheel.

Life-long learner & seeker of knowledge, VR/AR Expert & Enthusiast, Hardcore PC/VR Gamer, E-Commerce Expert with 8+ years of experience in the industry working in some of the top fortune 500’s, and now the CTO, and Co-Founder of Fire Loop VR.
In 2015, back when VR was just forming its roots in the industry, I ran into my now business partner, Oleg Churgel, when I was working at HP Inc, in Palo Alto. We were probably one of the few VR enthusiasts in the company who saw a potential opportunity to start a business in VR entertainment, specifically LBE. Being a long time gamer, and spending countless hours at internet cafes when I was younger, inspired me to start a similar concept, but for VR entertainment. VR/AR/MR/XR is the future, there is absolutely no doubt. It’s only a matter of time, and user adoption until it becomes mainstream.
With that in mind, we ended up starting Fire Loop in late 2018, and opening our first location in Irvine, CA, on January 20th 2020. Of course, this was right at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we obviously could not have chosen a worse time to open. That being said, not only did we manage to survive during the pandemic, but we increased our audience by 20x, as well as built a 5-star standard rating based on the quality of our services and high level of sanitizing/hygiene practices. Customer trust, happiness, and satisfaction as our top priority and focus for 2020. Our ever-increasing number of followers on social media is what gives us the wind on our backs to sail forward, ride this wave, with new future locations, and partnerships/opportunities that will propel us to conquer 2021!

Being a sportsman and being competitive on the playing field is Phillip’s credo. He started his professional paintball career at the age of 18 which lead him to the title of world champion in 2009. He made his hobby a profession, but he didn’t stop there. In 2015 he asked himself what the next level of competitive sport will be. Does it have to take place in the real world? With real-world physics and rules? Or is there a way to combine the physical component of real-world sports with the almost entirely free rules and physics of computer games? And what if people from all around the world would be able to challenge each other in a tournament? In collaboration with an old friend the idea and concept of Tower Tag was born which climaxed in the first public showcase of the Tower Tag on the CeBIT 2017. Since then millions of matches have been played within VR arcades and real championships with price money held in Asia and around the world, making Tower Tag a global phenomenon.

Ross Halleck sports a colorful history. After traveling halfway around the world with a backpack in the 1970s, he settled in Western Kenya to teach secondary school in a small village on Lake Victoria.

Returning to the US, he finished college and founded a branding agency in 1980 at the birth of Silicon Valley.

In pursuit of mutual passions, Ross focused on both high technology and wine, with offices in Silicon Valley and Sonoma County.

In 1992, Ross developed a Pinot Noir vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. His first 2001 vintage was judged the #1 Pinot Noir in the US.

This launched Halleck Vineyard.

Between 2016 -2018, Halleck Vineyard earned over 50 Gold medals in 10 national and international competitions. Then, in 2019, Halleck Vineyard was judged Best of Class, #1 Pinot Noir in North America, in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. This is the oldest, largest and most respected competition in the country. They were also judged Best of Class in Sunset Magazine, the California State Fair and the Orange County Wine Society for their other wines. In 2020, Halleck Vineyard was additionally recognized by the Taster’s Guild.

At the onset of the pandemic, Halleck Vineyard pivoted. In March of 2020 they launched the first Virtual Tasting Salon. This was covered by Forbes, 7×7, and Walnut Creek Magazine. Citibank, Delta Dental, XMatters, Pulse and scores of other companies engaged Ross to host events to reward top performers, support teams, and build community at a time it seemed impossible to do. This appears to be the future trajectory of the winery.

Their mission was, and is, Building Community Through Wine.
